黑料福利社 Langone doctors may recommend medication for dry eye disease, especially if it does not go away after you鈥檝e made recommended lifestyle changes. Most of these medications, such as artificial tears and lid scrubs, can be purchased over the counter. Your doctor may also prescribe a medication to manage blepharitis, an inflammation of oil glands along the rim of the eyelid that is one of the most common causes of dry eye disease.

Artificial Tears

黑料福利社 Langone ophthalmologists often suggest the use of artificial tears for mild dry eye disease. This is an over-the-counter medication available as an eye drop that helps to replace or supplement the tear film, the natural layer of water, oil, and mucus that keeps the eyes moist. The drops are typically used in both eyes two to four times each day, and are available in different concentrations. Your doctor can recommend specific brands and dosing information based on your symptoms.

If you wear contact lenses and have been diagnosed with dry eye disease, your doctor may recommend that you use artificial tears designed especially for people who wear contact lenses. These help to lubricate the eyes and prevent the lenses from drying out.

Compresses and Lid Scrubs

If you have blepharitis, a condition in which the oil glands along the eyelid become blocked so that not enough oil reaches the tear film, your ophthalmologist may recommend an eyelid scrub, in which you lightly rub a cleansing solution on the eyelid to remove oil and material on the surface. You can order these products online or purchase them over the counter at a pharmacy.

For more severe symptoms of blepharitis, a low daily dose of doxycycline, an oral antibiotic, can help to decrease inflammation and improve the functioning of the oil glands.

If you have demodex blepharitis, caused by an infestation of skin mites along the lid margin and lashes, you may benefit from lotilaner ophthalmic solution鈥攁n FDA-approved prescription eye drop to help eliminate mites.

Anti-Inflammatory Medications

Topical ointments and steroid eye drops may be used in instances where warm water and lid scrubs do not relieve symptoms, or if inflammation of the eye is more severe. They should not be used for extended periods of time because they can lead to glaucoma and other eye conditions and infections associated with the long-term use of topical steroids.

Your ophthalmologist may recommend closporine, a medicated eye drop designed for long-term use, if you have severe dry disease, or an autoimmune condition, such as聽Sj枚gren鈥檚 Disease听辞谤听systemic lupus erythematosus. Cyclosporin can help decrease inflammation caused by these conditions. The drops are typically administered twice a day.

Other anti-inflammatory drops, such as lifitigrast, suppress inflammation by blocking the binding of cell proteins that cause inflammation, reducing the inflammatory response associated with dry eye disease. These drops are prescribed to patients with moderate to severe dry eye disease who have not responded to artificial tools or other basic treatments.

Neuromodulation

Neuromodulation聽uses implanted devices and medications to modify abnormal nervous system activity. This technique can stimulate the nervous system to increase natural tear production and improve tear quality, relieving symptoms of dry eye disease.

Varenicline, a nasal spray medication, increases tear production through neuromodulation, utilizing the body鈥檚 ability to produce tears and mucins, rather than adding external lubrication.

Acoltremon ophthalmic is an FDA-approved eye drop that stimulates corneal sensory nerves to rapidly produce tears.

Anti-Evaporatives

Perfluorohexyloctane is used as an eye drop that forms a protective layer on the tear film鈥檚 surface to prevent evaporation and stabilize the tear film. By doing so, it reduces inflammation and promotes ocular surface healing, improving symptoms of dry eye disease.

Regenerative Medicine

There are several regenerative medicine options to treat dry eye disease. They include autologous serums, eye drops made using your blood, glycerin-based eye drops, and special contact lenses that support healing and comfort using stem cells or amniotic membranes.
