Our surgeons have pioneered minimally invasive aortic valve replacement and are among the most experienced at this approach nationwide. We use small incisions between the ribs or through the sternum when possible. In some cases of aortic valve stenosis, or valve narrowing, specialists may perform transcatheter aortic valve replacement. Our specialists help you determine which procedure is right for you.

For patients who require conventional surgery, our surgeons, nurses, and rehabilitation specialists promote advanced recovery, which means getting you out of bed and walking within a few hours of the procedure. This results in some of the shortest length of hospital stays in the country, helps you to return home, contributes to your healing and recovery, and improves outcomes.

We offer a full range of aortic valve surgeries, including conventional aortic valve replacement or repair, the innovative Ross Procedure, and a valve-sparing aortic root replacement (also known as the David Procedure).

Aortic Valve Replacement Surgery

In this procedure, surgeons remove the damaged aortic valve and replace it with a mechanical valve or an artificial valve made from animal tissue. This procedure is typically performed as open heart surgery, in which the breastbone is fully divided. In some instances, our surgeons can make a smaller incision that is known as a mini-sternotomy.

In some people, the damage to the valve鈥檚 leaflets, which are the thin flaps of tissue that open and close to control blood flow from the heart, is mild. In these cases, our surgeons may be able to repair the valve rather than replace it. The goal is to restore normal valve function, preserving the patient鈥檚 natural heart tissue while improving blood flow and heart function. This approach can prevent or delay the need for valve replacement.

Valve-Sparing Aortic Root Replacement (David Procedure)

Valve-sparing aortic root replacement, also known as the David Procedure, is performed to preserve the aortic valve instead of replacing it with an artificial valve.

Doctors repair the aortic valve using a synthetic tube called a graft, which is implanted into the aortic root, the part of the aorta that extends from the heart. It can be used to treat severely leaking valves in people with aortic valve regurgitation.

This procedure is most often performed on people who have an aortic root aneurysm, a bulge in the aortic root, along with aortic valve regurgitation.

This procedure can help you avoid the need for lifelong use of anticoagulant medication, also known as a blood thinner, or additional surgery to replace animal tissue valves, which wear out.

The Ross Procedure

Surgeons at 黑料福利社 Langone are experts in performing the Ross Procedure, an innovative treatment for aortic valve disease that is often a good option for young, active people.

During this procedure, our surgeons replace the diseased aortic valve with your own pulmonary valve, which normally handles blood flow from the heart to the lungs. The pulmonary valve is strong and flexible, making it well suited for taking over the job of the aortic valve. An artificial valve replaces your original pulmonary valve.

Because the Ross Procedure uses your own pulmonary valve tissue to create the new aortic valve, it often functions more like a natural heart valve, can last many years, and does not typically require lifelong use of blood thinners鈥攁s some artificial valves do. This procedure may also be an option for people who have an aortic root aneurysm located near a diseased aortic valve.
