The healthcare needs of children change as they age, and by the time they reach puberty, their medical concerns can become more complex. At the Adolescent Medicine Program, our specialists understand how to guide and support our patients through adolescence, empowering them to take ownership of their physical, emotional, and overall wellbeing.

Our pediatricians, part of Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÉç Langone, are board-certified adolescent medicine subspecialists. We care for adolescents starting at age 11 and can continue being their subspecialist provider until they turn 25, when we help them transition to an adult provider.

Subspecialty services we provide include the following:

• adolescent gynecologic care, including evaluation of genital lesions, vaginal discharge, and ovarian cysts
• treatment for menstrual problems due to chronic diseases such as bleeding disorders
• evaluation and treatment for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
• management of menstrual disorders that can be characterized by painful periods, premenstrual disorder, or absent, heavy, or irregular menses
• contraception counseling and management, including oral contraceptive pills, intrauterine device (IUD) placement and removal, and contraceptive implant (Nexplanon) placement and removal
• pregnancy testing and options for counseling during the first trimester only
• testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections as well as HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)
• consultation, assessment, and referral to appropriate services for adolescents up to age 18 experiencing eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia
• medical management of behavior concerns, including uncomplicated mood disorders
• gender-affirming medical care, including menstrual suppression, puberty blockers, and masculinizing and feminizing hormones
• management of adolescent issues related to complex chronic medical conditions such as diabetes and irritable bowel syndrome
